Mānoa Club Hunt

Mānoa Club Hunt is an application to aid students in their hunt for clubs to join.

Overview

The problem: UH Mānoa has hundreds of active clubs. However, it can be difficult for new students to find information about potential clubs they want to join.

The solution: Mānoa Club Hunt will provide students with a directory of clubs containing club information, club website links, and club contact information. Users will be able to search for clubs to join and filter clubs based on their interest preferences. Clubs will be able to provide information about their club by displaying an image, website link, description, contact information, interests, and email address.

Computer Engineering Major

As a former ICS 314 student I like that it displays all the clubs in a nice and organized manner. I like the simplicity of the website design. It would be good to implement a feature so that users submit a request to create a new club and the admin can accept or deny.

There were so much clubs that I didn’t know existed on campus. The club pages are good but it would be better if it was formatted nicely.

I like the idea that you can find clubs really easily instead of scrolling through an excel sheet.

I thought about joining clubs when I first dormed at Manoa but I didn’t know how. It’s too late for me now but I think this would be useful.

User Guide

Landing Page:

The Landing Page is the first page presented to users and gives a brief description of our application.

Login Page:

Clicking on “Login” in the top right corner of the page and then “Sign In” brings up the Login Page. Login if you are already a registered user.

Register Page:

Clicking on “Login” in the top right corner of the page and then “Sign Up” brings up the Register Page. Sign up if you are a new user.

Once you log in (either to an existing account or by creating a new one), the navbar changes and a list will appear at the bottom of the page displaying clubs with similar interests to you.

User Profile Page:

After logging in, click on the user icon in the top right of the navbar then click on “Your Profile”. You will go to the User Profile Page that shows all of the data associated with your profile.

Edit User Profile Page:

After logging in, and going to your profile page click on the “Edit Profile” button to go to the Edit User Profile Page. This page allows you to edit your user profile.

List Clubs Page:

The List Clubs Page shows all of the clubs currently in the system sorted alphabetically. Each club has a website link and club profile link. This page also features a dropdown bar that allows you to filter clubs based on their interest fields.

Club Profile Page:

Clicking on the “View Profile” link for a club takes you to the club’s profile page that displays information about the club. Clicking on an interest will take the user to the List Club page where the user can search for clubs by interest area. For example, here is AAUW-UHM’s Club Profile.

Edit Club Page:

While logged in, if you are an admin or officer you can click on “Edit Club” on the club profile page to go to the edit club page. This page allows you to edit the data associated with the club. For example, here is the Edit Club Page for AAUW-UHM.

Add Club Page:

While logged in, you can click on “Add Club” to go to the Add Club Page that allows you to add a club to the system.

Developer Guide

First, install Meteor.

Second, go to https://github.com/manoa-club-hunt/manoa-club-hunt, and click the “Clone or download” button to download the GitHub repo to your local file system. Using GitHub Desktop is the preferred method if you use MacOS or Windows.

Third, cd into the app/ directory of your local copy of the repo, and install third party libraries with:

$ meteor npm install

$ npm install react-slideshow-image -S

Running the system

Once the libraries are installed, you can run the application by invoking the “start” script in the package.json file:

$ meteor npm run start

The first time you run the application, it will create some default users, default user profiles, and club data. Here is the output:

Note regarding the “bcrypt warning”:

You will also get the following message when you run this application:

Note: you are using a pure-JavaScript implementation of bcrypt.
While this implementation will work correctly, it is known to be
approximately three times slower than the native implementation.
In order to use the native implementation instead, run

  meteor npm install --save bcrypt

in the root directory of your application.

On some operating systems (particularly Windows), installing bcrypt is much more difficult than implied by the above message. Bcrypt is only used in Meteor for password checking, so the performance implications are negligible until your site has very high traffic. You can safely ignore this warning without any problems during initial stages of development.

Viewing the running app

If all goes well, the Manoa Club Hunt application will appear at http://localhost:3000. You can login using the credentials in settings.development.json, or else register a new account.
